Flare-ups and remissions can happen at any time and may affect any part of the body.
The initial phase of atopic eczema usually occurs on the child's face at around 3 months to 2 years. In 4-10 year olds it takes on a different phase of a very itchy, pimply rash often accompanied by peeling skin and scabs. The eczema is found mainly in the folds of the body (bends of the knees, bends of the elbows, on the neck, etc.). It is important to keep these areas as dry as possible and dry off well after a bath, shower or swimming.
