Handling Attacks

Although they can be minimised, attacks cannot be totally excluded. However, through correct management their duration and effect can be largely controlled.

What to Do

  • Remain calm
  • Go to a well-ventilated area
  • Take the relaxation position recommended by your doctor or physiotherapist
  • Breathe in through the nose (to warm the air) and breathe out through pressed lips (to maintain pressure in the bronchi)
  • Take the medication prescribed by your doctor in exactly the prescribed dose
In case of a severe attack call your doctor

What NOT to Do

  • Do not become nervous or panicky (emotional stress can worsen the attack)
  • Do not overuse your inhaler (if you have been prescribed one)
  • Do not take a sedative or other calming medication
In case of a severe attack call your doctor
