Allergies are over-reactions by the body to substances it considers to be harmful, even if they are not. In most people, these substances produce no symptoms, but in sensitised people, they can trigger sneezing, wheezing, coughing and itching.
Most allergies are mild and merely unpleasant, but some have been linked to a variety of common and serious chronic respiratory illnesses, such as sinusitis and asthma.
Some allergic reactions can be severe and even fatal, however with correct management and education, can be controlled and people with allergies can lead normal and productive lives.
